Spot bitcoin punched back through a widely watched round number on November 4. A bitcoin short squeeze 80k forced roughly $378 million of short liquidations in a single hour on CoinGlass data cited by crypto.news, as BTC traded back above $80,000 and ether joined the rebound.

What happened

Crypto.news reported that bitcoin climbed back above $80,000 on Nov. 4 while crypto shorts worth $378.09 million were liquidated in one hour — about 81% of that hour's forced closures. The same CoinGlass snapshot put the hour's total liquidations at $466.33 million, including $88.24 million of longs, with four-hour short liquidations at $386.16 million and a $501.42 million four-hour total. Twelve-hour liquidations reached about $652 million, of which shorts were $526.44 million.

CryptoBriefing separately said the rally through $80,000 triggered more than $415 million in crypto liquidations, with shorts near $330 million and a single-hour short flush above $329 million; bitcoin shorts alone were put near $86 million. It put 24-hour liquidations above $510 million across more than 119,000 traders and cited a BTC peak near $80,270 in that piece. The Block said bitcoin rose about 3.5% to $80,500, ether about 6% to $2,433, futures volume about 27% and open interest about 3%, with roughly $469 million of leveraged positions flushed.

CoinMarketCap Academy's same-day note said bitcoin briefly topped $81,000 and that CoinGlass showed more than $300 million of bitcoin short liquidations over 24 hours, with Glassnode describing remaining shorts clustered near $87,000.

Why it matters

Forced short covering turned a midterm-week bounce into a mechanical squeeze higher. Our bitcoin democratic sweep dip coverage tracked the overnight slide toward $75,700; the bitcoin short squeeze 80k shows how quickly that risk-off print can reverse once liquidations flip from longs to shorts.

Flows still color the tape. The bitcoin ETF November outflows story left spot funds under pressure earlier in the week, so a squeeze through $80,000 matters more as a positioning flush than as proof that ETF demand has already healed.

Leverage metrics also warn that the move can cut both ways: twelve-hour short liquidations above $500 million leave less crowded fuel overhead if spot stalls below the next short cluster near $87,000.

CoinGlass hour-by-hour dominance also explains why the tape felt one-sided: nearly all of the four-hour short total arrived inside the peak hour, leaving little residual short inventory to cover once spot stabilized above $80,000. Traders watching CME FedWatch hike odds near 50.4% in the CryptoBriefing piece still treated the squeeze as positioning, not a fresh macro catalyst, which is why ETF flow follow-through remains the next confirmation layer rather than another liquidation print alone.

What's next

Watch whether $80,000 holds as support into the U.S. cash open and whether short open interest rebuilds below the Glassnode cluster near $87,000. Crypto.news's liquidation wrap is the primary source for the $378.09 million one-hour short print.

A failed hold under $80,000 would quickly test whether the bitcoin short squeeze 80k was a one-session flush rather than the start of a sustained November grind higher.

Ether's roughly 6% bounce to about $2,433 will be the first tell for whether altcoin beta can follow bitcoin through the round number without another leverage washout.

The call

We say Bitcoin will trade at or above $85,000 on Binance BTC/USDT at some point in November 2026. Polymarket priced Yes at 56% at 08:21 MSK on Nov. 5 on the November $85,000 reach contract. Spot already reclaimed $80,000 with a heavy short flush, so the open question is whether that squeeze extends into the mid-$80,000s before month-end.
