Prediction markets record weekend tops $11 billion in volume

Kalshi cleared $4 billion on back-to-back days as football lifted industry volume to a new high, though taker volume and parlay losses tell a quieter story.

The prediction markets record weekend arrived on Oct. 17 and 18, as operators logged more than $11 billion of notional volume for the first time. Saturday's $6.03 billion was the largest single day Aldrin Research has recorded, and Sunday brought $5.74 billion more, based on nine venues that had filed data by Monday, Covers said.

What happened

Kalshi led the field with its first $4 billion day. It traded a record $4.4 billion on Saturday, up 12.4% from a week earlier, and more than $4.1 billion on Sunday. Its two-day total of $8.51 billion gave it 58.4% of all notional dollars, while its taker volume was $1.89 billion.

Polymarket's U.S. arm took about 10% of the market with $1 billion, with Sunday figures still pending. DraftKings Predictions was third at $567.8 million, up nearly 46% week over week. Crypto.com produced more than $288 million in partial data, with Saturday volume of $195.8 million, up 80% from Oct. 10.

Combos dominated. Sports made up $1.44 billion of Sunday's volume, with $3.7 billion on multi-leg trades. Kalshi reported $497.2 million in NFL volume on Sunday, down from $575 million the previous Sunday as four teams had a bye. The Cowboys-Packers game drew $185.9 million across reporting operators, including $134.5 million on Kalshi. On Kalshi, Bills-Raiders drew $59 million and the early Texans-Jaguars game in London $57.8 million.

College football carried Saturday. Ohio State's Big Ten win over Indiana drew nearly $95 million in volume, ahead of Notre Dame-BYU at $92.7 million; Nebraska-Oregon and Florida State-Miami each cleared $67 million. Trading on NCAA games excluding combos rose 1.8% from the prior Saturday, and multi-leg contracts made up over $4 billion of Saturday's total.

Why it matters

The numbers show how sports, and parlays in particular, now drive the business. Notional volume counts the face value of each contract matched, which flatters low-priced parlays. That gap explains why Kalshi's taker figure is less than a quarter of its notional total, a point we also raised when covering its weekly volume record.

Retail outcomes are getting attention too. Parlay takers on DraftKings' DKeX exchange have staked $239.4 million since its Aug. 26 launch and lost $60.8 million after fees, or 25.8%, InGame reported, according to TrueEdge Wire. That compares with 14.4% for Kalshi's parlay takers and 19.5% for DraftKings' sportsbook parlays in Illinois. TrueEdge discloses it earns affiliate fees from sportsbooks.

Each prediction markets record weekend also sharpens the regulatory debate over whether such contracts are gambling, which the CFTC addressed in its interim final rule on casino-style event contracts.

What's next

Final numbers will move. Robinhood, Crypto.com and ProphetX had filed only partial data by Monday morning. Independent trackers put Kalshi at $4,397,876,972 for Oct. 17 and $4,109,810,651 for Oct. 18, according to Ticker Tracker, and at $80.56 billion over 30 days.

College football and the NFL will keep supplying weekend peaks through the season. Whether the next prediction markets record weekend comes soon depends on the schedule and on how many games end up in parlays rather than single bets.
