An AI stock perpetuals flash crash hit crypto venues late on Saturday, Oct. 17, as contracts tracking Micron, SanDisk, SK Hynix and other chip names dropped more than 6% within minutes while U.S. stock exchanges were closed. About $51.6 million of leveraged positions were liquidated between 21:22 and 21:32 UTC, TokenPost reported, and most prices clawed back a large part of the move soon afterwards.

What happened

Buyers took most of the damage. Roughly $38.1 million of long positions were forced out, against about $13.5 million of shorts. Contracts on SOXL, a leveraged semiconductor fund, led the tally at about $12.7 million, followed by SanDisk at $10.8 million and two SK Hynix tickers at a combined $10.7 million. The inverse chip fund SOXS added $9.1 million and Micron $4.4 million.

Binance prices show how deep the air pocket was. Its Micron contract fell as much as 6.32% to $818.57 before recovering to $864.55, Phemex reported. SK Hynix dropped 6.30% to $127.68, Western Digital 7.03% to $298.70, Nebius 6.97% to $155.12, SanDisk 6.1% to $1,215.35 and CoreWeave 5.87% to $57.55. Bloomingbit put the deepest intraday drops at as much as 9%.

Smaller names moved just as violently. Applied Optoelectronics dropped 6.93% to $70.04 and IREN 6.92% to $24.88 before recovering, Phemex said. TokenPost put the gap between long and short liquidations at about $24.5 million, a sign that most traders had been positioned for a weekend rebound after Friday's selloff in cash markets.

Tread.fi chief executive DYJ traced the start to Binance, where the first aggressive SanDisk sell order printed at 21:21:59.39 UTC. In a window of about 1.8 seconds that followed, roughly 10 wallets opened fresh short positions using immediate-or-cancel orders, none of them reduce-only, he said. During that minute, SanDisk turnover was about $21.9 million on Binance against roughly $3.1 million on TradeXYZ.

Hyperliquid processed its first batch of sweep orders at 21:21:59.87 UTC, including SanDisk immediate-or-cancel orders and SOXL trigger orders, and a second synchronized burst of selling followed at 21:22:55.9, according to the TechFlow account of DYJ's analysis. Binance's Micron contract traded about $5.1 million in the 21:22 minute, against roughly $300,000 on TradeXYZ.

Why it matters

Hyperliquid volume only surged at 21:28 and 21:30 UTC, when Micron turnover reached $10.8 million and $9.5 million, which DYJ attributed to cascading liquidations rather than new selling. That is the core risk of the AI stock perpetuals flash crash: weekend contracts have no primary-exchange circuit breakers, and thin books can be pushed hard by a few coordinated orders.

On Hyperliquid, many of these markets are builder-deployed. Under HIP-3, the deployer defines the contract, sets oracle prices and leverage limits, and must stake 500,000 HYPE. The demand is real. After Tesla's flying Roadster demo, hourly volume in TSLA perpetuals jumped from $2.8 million to $47 million, CoinDesk reported, with Binance at $279 million of daily volume, Hyperliquid at $159 million and leverage of up to 20x.

The selloff also extended a brutal week for AI names in cash markets, where CoreWeave's debt stress dragged on the sector. Venues that list tokenized and synthetic equities let traders keep those bets running after Wall Street's Friday close.

What's next

Monday's open is the first test. Micron shares closed Friday at $878.84, so the weekend low implied a further gap that the contract had already largely erased by the time Phemex reported the rebound. If cash prices open near Friday's levels, the episode will look like a liquidity event rather than a signal.

None of the reports reviewed carried comment from Binance or Hyperliquid on the order flow DYJ described. Tesla reports third-quarter results on Oct. 21, giving its busy perpetual markets another stress test. Traders will watch whether exchanges tighten leverage or price bands after this AI stock perpetuals flash crash.
