Gold below $4,000 for first time since July as oil lifts rate fears

Bullion headed for its worst week since June as margin calls from the tech selloff and higher-for-longer rate bets overwhelmed safe-haven demand.

Gold below $4,000 for first time since July as oil lifts rate fears

Gold below $4,000 an ounce became reality on Friday, Oct. 23, for the first time since mid-July. Spot bullion was down 0.6% at $3,998.49 in afternoon New York trading, according to Reuters reporting carried by CNBC, and was on track for a 4% weekly loss, its worst week since June. December futures settled 1.3% lower at $4,007.90.

What happened

The slide built through the week. Spot gold opened Sunday evening near $4,164.69 and peaked at $4,190.17 early Monday, Kitco News said, before selling took hold. Kitco put Friday's low at $3,975.10, while BeInCrypto, in a piece carried by Yahoo Finance, cited an intraday low of $3,986.85.

Other metals fell too. Spot silver lost 1% to $53.97, palladium dropped 0.5% to $1,048.31 and platinum fell 0.9% to $1,555.84, Reuters said, leaving silver at a low last seen in November 2025 and palladium at its weakest since June 2025. Anadolu Agency calculated that gold has lost 6.3% over the past month.

Why it matters

Two forces pushed gold below $4,000 at the same time. Thursday's rout in technology shares forced leveraged investors to raise cash. "The selling pressure took gold back below $4,000 per ounce," Rich Checkan of Asset Strategies International told Kitco, describing gold as the asset traders sell first to meet margin calls.

Oil did the rest. Brent hit its highest in nearly six months, and Jim Wyckoff of American Gold Exchange said inflation worries mean central banks "won't be able to ease monetary policies as quickly as they want to." Traders see a 92% chance the Fed holds next week and a 78% chance of a December hike, according to CME FedWatch data cited by Reuters. Higher rates raise the cost of holding a metal that pays no yield.

Not everyone is bearish. Justin Lin of Global X ETFs sees $3,900 as the next test but still expects a V-shaped rebound, according to BeInCrypto, while Bank of America has flagged a possible low near $3,750. The move mirrors the bond rally we covered in the 10-year yield plunge, and it keeps alive the hawkish path laid out in Waller's call for more hikes.

What's next

The Fed decides on Oct. 28, and the PCE inflation report follows on Oct. 29. Marc Chandler of Bannockburn Global Forex told Kitco that resistance sits around $4,065 to $4,075 and that momentum still looks weak.

On Polymarket, the chance that gold trades at or below $3,900 at any point in October stood at 38% as of 08:30 MSK on Oct. 24. That contract settles on one-minute XAUUSD candles published by Pyth, so a brief intraday dip would count.

The call

We call that gold will NOT trade at or below $3,900 an ounce in October 2026. Polymarket prices that outcome at 63%. Gold below $4,000 reflects forced selling more than a new trend, and a Fed hold next week would ease the pressure with few sessions left.
