Switzerland's central bank is having a profitable year on paper. The SNB nine-month profit came to CHF 44.2 billion through the end of September, the Swiss National Bank said on Friday, with a third-quarter gain of CHF 19.1 billion, about $23.3 billion, according to CNBC's conversion.

What happened

Foreign currency positions did the heavy lifting, producing CHF 43.3 billion over nine months. Inside that figure, interest and dividend income contributed CHF 10.7 billion and CHF 2.3 billion, equity price gains added CHF 23.7 billion, and exchange-rate effects were worth CHF 29.8 billion, offset by CHF 22.6 billion of price losses on bonds and other interest-bearing paper.

Gold added a CHF 1.2 billion valuation gain for the period, with holdings unchanged in volume. The metal ended September at CHF 112,118 per kilogram, slightly above the end-2025 level of CHF 110,919. Swiss franc positions contributed CHF 0.1 billion, mostly from interest on sight deposits and liquidity-absorbing operations.

For the third quarter alone, CNBC reported gold gains of CHF 7.6 billion and foreign currency gains of CHF 11.6 billion, with overall quarterly profit down almost 32% from a year earlier.

Why it matters

The SNB runs one of the world's biggest foreign reserve portfolios and, unusually, holds equities directly. At quarter-end, 61% of reserves sat in government bonds, 28% in stocks and 11% in other bonds; by currency, 39% was in euros and 37% in dollars, CNBC said. That makes its results a rough mark-to-market of global markets in francs.

The size of the gain revives the question of a year-end payout to the federal government and cantons. The bank stresses that only provisional conclusions are possible, since provisions for currency reserves are set at year-end. A strong fourth quarter for tech stocks is no longer assured after this week's selloff, a risk visible in our gold below $4,000 and FINMA bitcoin ETF coverage of Swiss and global asset swings.

Context matters for the comparison with last year. In the third quarter of 2025, the bank recorded a 14.3 billion-franc net gain on gold after a historic rally, while in 2026 the metal has been more volatile and is down more than 7% since January, CNBC said. The franc rose about 12% against the dollar in 2025. Those moves explain why the SNB nine-month profit is large yet still well below what last year's pace implied, and why the bank refuses to project a full-year figure.

What's next

Any distribution depends on the full-year result and the payout rules, CNBC noted. The bank's own interim results release has the breakdown.

With global equities falling into month-end, the SNB nine-month profit is a snapshot, not a promise. Strong fluctuations are to be expected, the bank itself warns.

Franc strength is the swing factor to watch: a firmer franc shrinks the value of foreign holdings in local terms, which is how a profitable year can still end with a smaller number than markets expect.
