Bitcoin worst October since 2014 ends with a 7% monthly loss
Bitcoin closed October about 7.2% to 7.3% lower depending on the venue, its weakest October in more than a decade, with most of the damage done in the final three days.

"Uptober" did not show up. The monthly candle that closed at midnight UTC confirmed bitcoin worst October since 2014, a loss of a little over 7% that turned a month of sideways trading into a clear negative in the space of three sessions.
What happened
On Binance's BTC/USDT market the month opened at $83,623.59 and closed at $77,582.02, a 7.22% decline, with a high of $87,220 and a low of $76,325.98 on October 30, according to Trader Villa's monthly summary. Corgano's daily-close data show a 7.3% fall, from $83,553.85 at the end of September to $77,424.24, leaving bitcoin down 11.5% for the year.
CryptoWatchDesk noted that on Bitstamp's history only October 2014, with a 13.2% drop, was worse, while 2018 and 2025 posted smaller losses and the other Octobers since 2015 rose. Coinbase's stock closed Friday down 10.6% at $143.54 as crypto shares absorbed the hack more sharply than the coin itself.
The timing is the story. Bitcoin closed October 28 at $81,287, only 2.7% below the month's open, CryptoWatchDesk said. Then the Binance theft hit after Thursday's U.S. close, and the worst single session, October 29, cost 4.12% on Binance data.
Why it matters
Seasonality is a weak guide, and this month proved it. A macro backdrop of Fed hike talk, high oil prices and an AI-led equity selloff left little appetite for risk, and the hack supplied the trigger, as our bitcoin tumble below $78k and bitcoin hack resilience reports showed.
Still, the drop was orderly. Bitcoin held above its mid-September lows near $76,231 on hourly closes, and derivatives funding stayed close to zero, which suggests forced selling was limited compared with past crashes.
Other assets did not offer much shelter. Corgano's data show gold down 6.9% and silver 18.3% over the month, while U.S. stocks including dividends slipped 0.9%. Bitcoin finished 37.9% below its highest close, the same data show. For holders, bitcoin worst October means the year-to-date loss has widened just as the calendar enters the months that bulls usually count on, and that November opens with no cushion from earlier gains.
What's next
November starts with Binance reopening withdrawals, U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday and the jobs report on Friday. Trader Villa's October BTC summary has the day-by-day table.
A sustained move back above $78,670, Friday's high, would ease pressure. A break of the September lows would make bitcoin worst October a prelude rather than a flush.
The call
We say bitcoin stays above $74,000 into Friday. Polymarket's "Will the price of Bitcoin be above $74,000 on November 6?" market priced Yes at 86% at 08:23 MSK on Nov. 1; it settles on the Binance BTC/USDT one-minute close at noon ET on November 6. Spot was trading in the $77,000s at build time, so the strike sits about 4% below, with the withdrawal reopening and the jobs report as the main risks.
