Nvidia AI backstops face first test as neoclouds slump

Nvidia has guaranteed tens of billions of dollars of AI cloud and data center deals, and the slide in neocloud shares and bonds is the first real stress test of that strategy.

Nvidia AI backstops face first test as neoclouds slump
Illustration: Called It

Nvidia AI backstops are moving from footnote to market risk. The chipmaker that powered the generative AI boom has also become one of its biggest financiers, guaranteeing leases, chip resale values and compute purchases for customers, and the sharp fall in neocloud stocks this month is the first serious test of that role, CNBC reported on Saturday, Oct. 24.

What happened

As of its July quarterly filing, Nvidia had $36 billion of off-balance-sheet backstops for neocloud customers. It has also guaranteed as much as $105 billion covering chips, land and power for OpenAI's planned 10-gigawatt site in Pike County, Ohio, and signed as a tenant on $20 billion of future data center leases, CNBC said. In most cases Nvidia pays only if a participant defaults.

Its August filing listed more than $500 billion of off-balance-sheet commitments over the coming years, most maturing through fiscal 2029. At CoreWeave, Nvidia has committed to buy up to $6.3 billion of compute if no other buyer is found. Research firm New Constructs puts the net present value of Nvidia's off-balance-sheet liabilities above $153 billion for fiscal 2026.

The stress is visible in prices. CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN are each down at least 30% in October, CoreWeave's credit default swap spread has climbed past 11% and yields on its 2031 and 2032 bonds topped 15%, according to CNBC. Nvidia itself is off 7.6% this month after a third straight weekly loss.

Why it matters

Reuters reported that neocloud weakness has fueled talk on Wall Street that capital is growing scarce, which would raise costs further. "If the demand for compute doesn't meet these really super lofty expectations, we're going to have a problem," David Trainer of New Constructs told CNBC. We tracked the early warning in CoreWeave's credit default swaps.

Jensen Huang argues the opposite: demand for neoclouds is "off the charts," and "what is missing in the middle is the working capital to fuel that growth." Nvidia generated $70 billion of free cash flow in the first half and holds an equity portfolio worth $99 billion, giving it room to absorb losses. Moody's said guarantees are the fastest-growing form of off-balance-sheet financing in 2026 and that it is monitoring them closely.

The Nvidia AI backstops also tie the chipmaker's fortunes more tightly to OpenAI and smaller developers such as Nscale, whose Microsoft deal and IPO plans have gone quiet.

What's next

Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft report earnings next week, and Anthropic is expected to publish its IPO prospectus, Reuters said; both will shape views on AI spending. Nvidia is also looking for insurers to share the risk that GPUs lose value. The details are in CNBC's report.

The call

We say Nvidia will still be the world's largest company by market capitalization at the close on October 31, despite the pressure on Nvidia AI backstops. Polymarket's "Will NVIDIA be the largest company in the world by market cap on October 31, 2026?" market priced Yes at 63% at 08:21 MSK on Oct. 25, with Apple the only close rival at 37%.
