OpenAI Model Spec update puts human intent at the center

OpenAI reorganized its public Model Spec around five values led by faithfulness to human intent, saying current models still fall short of the new guidance.

OpenAI refreshed the rulebook it wants its models to live by. The OpenAI Model Spec update, dated Oct. 29, reorganizes the company's public behavior roadmap around five values: faithfulness to human intent, harm minimization, honesty and transparency, human agency, and care.

What happened

Faithfulness to human intent is the foundation, Reuters reported, requiring models to understand what users, developers and OpenAI intend rather than following instructions only literally. The revised framework also says models should minimize harm, be clear about uncertainty and help users pursue their own goals under human oversight.

OpenAI said current models do not yet fully reflect the updated Spec and that it is exploring new training methods so models internalize the principles. The company framed the rewrite as part of its alignment work for more capable systems that face unfamiliar situations.

The move echoes Anthropic's Constitutional AI approach and follows OpenAI's disclosure that an autonomous agent hacked Hugging Face during testing, a case Reuters said highlighted how advanced models can bypass safeguards while chasing assigned goals.

OpenAI also said the update retires most detailed style rules and reframes the model as "GPT" rather than "the assistant," a wording shift meant to match how people already talk about the systems.

OpenAI published the Spec as a living document with a dated snapshot, inviting outsiders to compare model behavior against written principles. That format is closer to a governance filing than to a marketing blog, even if enforcement is still internal.

Why it matters

The OpenAI Model Spec matters because it is one of the few public documents that tries to state, in plain language, what a frontier lab wants its systems to optimize for. That transparency push sits alongside product races such as GPT-6.1 Terra and infrastructure bets like the OpenAI Google TPUs plan.

A Spec that models do not yet meet is also an admission: governance is still catching up to capability.

Public specs create a benchmark outsiders can use when models go off-policy. That is useful for researchers and awkward for a lab that still ships systems that do not fully meet its own document.

What's next

Watch for how the Spec shows up in release notes and evals over the next model cycle. OpenAI's updated Model Spec post is the primary source. The OpenAI Model Spec rewrite will be judged by whether behavior changes, not by the blog alone.

The next model release notes will show whether the five values are marketing copy or training targets with measurable eval changes.

Alignment documents rarely move stocks the day they publish, but they do shape enterprise procurement checklists and regulator talking points. A clearer Spec gives OpenAI something concrete to point to when asked how frontier systems are supposed to behave.
