CoreWeave credit default swaps flash distress as AI debt sours
Illustration: Called It

CoreWeave credit default swaps have become the clearest gauge of the market's patience with debt-funded AI infrastructure. The spread on the neocloud's five-year contracts, which insure against default, rose above 1,140 basis points at one point on Thursday, a level analysts treat as distressed. On Friday the stock fell another 12%, taking its five-session loss to about 25%.

What happened

CoreWeave's build-out rests on over $51 billion of borrowings and related obligations, CNBC reported. The yield to maturity on its 9.75% bond due 2031 reached 15.78%. The five-year spread last stood near 1,038 basis points, up 16% in a week and 164% from a year earlier.

Gavan Nolan of S&P Global Market Intelligence said spreads of 1,000 basis points or more generally signal credit distress. He added that nobody doubts demand for CoreWeave's services; the question is whether cash flow arrives in time to justify the capital spending. Evercore ISI's trading desk said the market was "basically saying 'no mas'" to AI debt without operating cash-flow support.

Chief executive Mike Intrator pushed back in a memo seen by CNBC, saying markets sometimes misunderstand new kinds of technology companies and that the firm's backlog more than supports its debt. Deutsche Bank put that backlog above $100 billion, with about two-thirds tied to investment-grade customers including Microsoft and Meta.

Why it matters

The stress is spreading. Reuters said Broadcom fell 4.5% on Friday and the PHLX chip index dropped 3.8% for an eighth straight decline, its longest losing streak since 2008. Oracle's five-year CDS spread rose about 10% in a week to 282 basis points, and Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid warned this kind of concern can become self-fulfilling.

Crypto has direct exposure through miners that pivoted to AI hosting. CoinDesk reported Hut 8, IREN, CleanSpark, Keel Infrastructure and Cipher Mining were each down roughly 6% by late morning on Friday. Goldman Sachs noted that AI-related high-yield spreads widened 25 basis points this week while non-AI spreads barely moved, putting neoclouds at the center of the funding-cost debate.

That framing matters for miners that have borrowed against hosting contracts, including Cipher's $850 million convertible notes, and it echoes the Larry Fink data center warning from earlier in the week. CoreWeave credit default swaps now act as a real-time referendum on that business model.

What's next

Earnings will test the thesis next. Meta, one of CoreWeave's investment-grade customers, reports next week, and Reuters said analysts expect overall third-quarter earnings growth above 30%, driven by AI megacaps. Any sign that hyperscalers are trimming capital spending would hit the most leveraged suppliers first.

Prediction markets give the tail a price. Polymarket's "Will CoreWeave announce bankruptcy by December 31, 2027?" contract traded near 14% Yes as of 08:28 MSK on Oct. 17, well below what a 1,000-basis-point CDS spread might suggest to a casual reader. Wide spreads signal stress, not a filing date, and CoreWeave credit default swaps will keep pricing that gap daily.

The call

Polymarket prices "Will CoreWeave announce bankruptcy by December 31, 2027?" at about 86% No as of 08:28 MSK on Oct. 17. We call No: CoreWeave will not announce a bankruptcy filing by Dec. 31, 2027. Distressed spreads reflect a refinancing squeeze, but a backlog above $100 billion with mostly investment-grade customers gives the company room to raise or restructure before a filing. This is a dated record call, not investment advice.
