Kalshi S&P partnership will turn prediction market prices into indices
Kalshi becomes a preferred venue for contracts that settle on official S&P 500 and Dow values, and S&P DJI will build indices from Kalshi data, as the exchange also adds limits for its youngest traders.

The company behind the S&P 500 is stepping into prediction markets. The Kalshi S&P partnership, a multi-year collaboration announced this week, makes Kalshi a preferred platform for event contracts tied to S&P Dow Jones Indices benchmarks and lets S&P DJI build indices out of Kalshi's market data.
What happened
Forthcoming Kalshi contracts on the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and other S&P DJI indices will settle against official published index values, the companies said. In the other direction, S&P DJI is named a preferred builder of indices based on Kalshi's contract data, potentially covering economics, politics and sports.
Kalshi sketched what that could look like: an index of political power across elections, one of supply chain risk, one tracking AI's effect on jobs, plus sports and weather indices. Neither side has named first products, methodologies or launch dates, Finance Magnates noted, and both described the arrangement as preferred rather than exclusive. S&P DJI does not sponsor or endorse the contracts.
Why it matters
"Kalshi's aspiration is to be the next great financial exchange," co-founder and CEO Tarek Mansour said. S&P DJI chief Cathy Clay said robust indices "help to define markets" as prediction markets mature. There are precedents on both sides: ICE packages Polymarket prices into data feeds for professionals, and Cboe launched yes-or-no options on its Mini-S&P 500 index in June, Finance Magnates said. Kalshi has been moving the same way with its KPI markets and league ties such as the NBA prediction market deal.
The Kalshi S&P partnership arrived alongside a safety move. Kalshi set a $2,500 monthly deposit limit for traders aged 18 to 20 and will alert new users with balances above $1,000 who put more than 25% of their funds into one trade, Reuters reported. COO Luana Lopes Lara said new traders need more education and safeguards, and stressed that the platform is open only to adults. Kalshi is also working with Parent ProTech and ConnectSafely, two parent and youth safety groups, on parents' guides to prediction markets, Reuters said. Critics argue the platforms resemble gambling and carry addiction risk, a debate that has followed both Kalshi and Polymarket as their volumes have grown.
What's next
Kalshi pointed out that over $20 trillion tracked or was benchmarked against the S&P 500 at the end of 2024, which shows the scale of the market it hopes to tap. For traders, the practical change is settlement: contracts that resolve on the same official numbers institutions already use should be easier to compare with futures and options on the same benchmarks. The next milestones are the first index methodology and the first contracts that settle on S&P DJI data, which will show whether the Kalshi S&P partnership produces real products. Terms are in S&P DJI's announcement.
