NBA prediction market deal names Kalshi and Polymarket preferred exchanges
The NBA signed an information-sharing pact with the CFTC and named Kalshi and Polymarket its preferred prediction market exchanges, becoming the third major U.S. league to embrace event contracts while the NFL sides with the states.

Professional basketball has picked a side in the fight over sports event contracts. The NBA prediction market deal announced on Monday combines a cooperation agreement with the federal derivatives regulator and commercial partnerships that make Kalshi and Polymarket the league's preferred exchanges.
What happened
The agreement, which carries the signatures of the league's commissioner, Adam Silver, and the agency's chairman, Michael Selig, commits both sides to share information that could affect the integrity of the game, Reuters reported. The league said the exchange agreements limit which markets can be listed, bar league and team personnel from trading NBA contracts, and require the platforms to share information on suspicious trading and investigations.
In return, Kalshi and Polymarket get rights to NBA intellectual property and U.S. marketing, plus official league data from Sportradar to run and settle authorized markets. The NBA also widened its DraftKings agreement to cover prediction markets and said more operator deals will follow in the coming weeks. Kalshi said it will route integrity data through direct channels with the league and pointed to its existing surveillance work with IC360 and athlete-protection partnership with Signify.
Why it matters
The league is the third of the big North American leagues to sign such an arrangement, after the NHL and MLB, according to Reuters. The NFL has gone the other way, backing a request for the Supreme Court to review whether states should regulate sports contracts and arguing in a filing that CFTC oversight is lax and understaffed, CoinDesk reported. Three major federal court decisions have split on the question, two of them favoring the states.
For the CFTC, every league partnership strengthens the argument that event contracts are financial products under federal supervision rather than gambling. Selig called the agreement a responsible step against abuses such as insider trading, CoinDesk said. For exchanges, an NBA prediction market deal brings official data and a national marketing channel. We covered Kalshi's earlier anti-harassment rule with Signify and the broader Supreme Court push on prediction markets.
The timing matters too. Reuters noted that the agreement follows betting scandals that led to lifetime bans, and a federal illegal-gambling probe last year in which more than 30 people were arrested. Players can still promote prediction platforms in general and for non-NBA sports, but not NBA-related markets. Several stars already have sponsorship deals with prediction platforms, Reuters said, including LeBron James, and other sports have signed similar arrangements: Kalshi has a deal with the US Open tennis tournament, while the men's ATP tour partnered with Polymarket.
The commercial stakes are significant for both exchanges. Official data from Sportradar reduces settlement disputes, which have been a recurring complaint from traders on sports contracts, and league marketing rights put the platforms in front of a national audience that until recently saw them only as betting rivals.
What's next
Watch for which other sportsbooks sign as authorized operators and whether states that are suing exchanges respond to the league's stance. Silver has said the NBA deals with roughly 40 different jurisdictions and would prefer a single national policy, a quote Kalshi highlighted. Whether the NBA prediction market deal becomes the template for other leagues may depend on how the Supreme Court handles the state-versus-federal question. The full terms are outlined in the NBA's announcement.
