JPM Coin on Ethereum widens JPMorgan's public-chain push

JPMorgan's dollar deposit token is now live on Ethereum mainnet for approved institutional clients, extending a Base launch from November 2025.

JPM Coin on Ethereum went live on Monday, Oct. 19, as JPMorgan Chase extended its dollar deposit token to a second public blockchain. The bank's Kinexys unit said the token, ticker JPMD, is now available to institutional clients on the Ethereum mainnet, alongside Base, the layer-2 network built by Coinbase.

What happened

JPM Coin represents U.S. dollar deposits held at JPMorgan and lets eligible clients move funds within seconds at any hour. The bank first issued it on Base in November 2025, saying then that more public networks would follow. In January it outlined plans to add the Canton Network.

A spokesperson told Cointelegraph the token had been technically deployed on Ethereum mainnet. Access is limited to vetted counterparties, even though transactions are recorded on a public ledger. JPMorgan stresses that the token is a bank-issued deposit, not a stablecoin or a cryptocurrency.

Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, said Ethereum was chosen for its liquidity and because institutional clients already use it. In the bank's statement she described issuance on Base and now Ethereum as a step toward giving clients multi-chain options for moving wholesale money across crypto and traditional finance.

JPMorgan's product page says client funds stay inside the bank's regulated infrastructure, while users can track tokens, transaction status and settlement almost as they happen. That combination of a shared, traceable ledger with a closed list of approved participants is how the bank reconciles public blockchains with its compliance obligations.

Why it matters

The move puts a regulated bank liability directly next to tokenized assets and collateral on the largest smart-contract network. Crypto firms can use JPM Coin on Ethereum for blockchain payments, while financial institutions can settle trades and post collateral with it, Landriault said. JPMorgan Asset Management already runs tokenized money market funds on Ethereum, so cash and fund shares can now sit on the same rails.

Scale is the bank's argument. Kinexys has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions and averages about $7 billion a day, JPMorgan said. CoinDesk noted that this is still a small slice of a payments business that moves about $12 trillion daily, and that DeFiLlama data show close to $50 billion of crypto deposited in apps built on Ethereum.

Competition among banks is rising. JPMorgan, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are among more than a dozen U.S. lenders planning a shared network for tokenized deposits, a trend covered in our report on Wall Street banks' tokenization plans. Deposit tokens pitch themselves as a bank-grade alternative to stablecoins for institutions that want on-chain cash without leaving the regulated perimeter.

What's next

Several questions remain open. JPMorgan has not given volume figures for JPM Coin itself, and it has not said when the Canton Network version will go live. The bank's Kinexys announcement frames the launch as part of a broader set of tokenized products on Ethereum.

For DeFi, the immediate impact is limited because the token stays permissioned. Still, institutions now active on Base, where lending venues such as those in our Base earn and borrow coverage operate, will watch whether JPM Coin on Ethereum becomes a settlement asset for tokenized collateral in the months ahead.
