Iowa Senate odds tighten to 52-48 as Trump rallies in Dubuque

Republican Ashley Hinson's chance of winning Iowa's open Senate seat fell to 52% on Kalshi, a four-point drop in 24 hours, as President Trump held a Sunday rally in Dubuque and late polls showed Democrat Josh Turek narrowly ahead.

A state Donald Trump carried comfortably two years ago has become one of the tightest Senate contests on the board. Iowa Senate odds on Kalshi moved to 52% for Republican Ashley Hinson and 48% for Democrat Josh Turek on Sunday, a four-point slide for the Republican in a single day, according to the exchange's own market report.

What happened

The shift came as Trump rallied supporters in Dubuque's Five Flags Civic Center on Sunday, November 1, his second Iowa appearance in under two weeks after an October 22 stop in Sioux City, Iowa Public Radio reported. The Dubuque event had been cancelled on Thursday, replaced by a telephone rally and then restored a day later.

Trump predicted "a much bigger win on Tuesday" and urged voters to back Hinson, along with gubernatorial nominee Zach Lahn. Hinson cast the race as "common sense versus crazy" and urged supporters to keep Democrats from taking the Senate, Iowa Public Radio said.

Polls show a coin flip. Kalshi's report cited a YouGov poll of 2,020 likely voters, conducted October 26 to 29, with Turek ahead 50% to 49%, and Nate Silver's forecast at 47.3% for Turek against 46.5% for Hinson. It also cited a New York Times/Siena poll showing Turek slightly ahead within the margin of error.

Why it matters

Hinson has never trailed in market-implied odds, but her lead has shrunk to a new low, Kalshi said. Traders still priced her margin of victory at 1.1 points, up from 0.1 on October 29, which shows how little separates the candidates.

Early voting adds uncertainty. About 432,000 registered Iowans had cast early ballots, 47% of them Democrats and 34% Republicans, according to NBC News figures citing TargetSmart that Kalshi quoted. Republicans, meanwhile, are counting on a roughly 180,000-voter registration advantage, Iowa Public Radio reported, in a state Trump won by 13 points in 2024.

Iowa matters for the national picture. Our midterm prediction market odds review showed Democrats favoured for the Senate, and a Turek win would widen their path. Thin state markets can swing on a few large orders, as our election odds manipulation piece explained, so a four-point move in a day deserves caution.

Turek also faces criticism from some Democrats over a campaign ad about transgender athletes and gender-affirming care, as The Hill and The Washington Post reported, according to Kalshi's summary.

Iowa Senate odds of 52-48 imply a far closer race than Trump's 13-point margin in the state in 2024 would suggest.

What's next

Polls close on Tuesday night, and Iowa also has competitive House races in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd districts. Kalshi's Iowa market report tracks the latest prices.

If Iowa Senate odds keep drifting towards Turek through Monday, the race could become one of the night's clearest tests of whether prediction markets read late momentum better than polls.
