Tether Q3 profit hits $1.5 billion as excess reserves nearly double
Tether reported $1.5 billion of third-quarter net operating profit and said its reserve buffer rose to $7.95 billion, according to a BDO attestation dated September 30.

The world's largest stablecoin issuer just had another very good quarter. The Tether Q3 profit figure came in at $1.5 billion of net operating profit, the company said on Friday, matching the second quarter and lifting its nine-month total to $4.5 billion while its cushion above customer liabilities almost doubled.
What happened
The numbers come from an attestation prepared by BDO covering Tether's reserves report as of September 30. Management asserts total assets of $191.45 billion against liabilities of $183.50 billion, nearly all of it tokens in circulation, leaving an excess of about $7.95 billion. That buffer stood at $4.1 billion at the end of June, an increase of roughly $3.8 billion.
USDT issuance held near $184 billion through the first three quarters, Tether said, and most income came from U.S. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements. Direct and indirect T-bill holdings total $132.4 billion. Crypto Briefing's breakdown of the report lists $122.84 billion of directly held bills, about $19.08 billion of precious metals, $8.37 billion of bitcoin and $14.18 billion of secured loans.
Cointelegraph noted that the T-bill exposure is comparable to South Korea's $134.2 billion of U.S. government debt and larger than the United Arab Emirates' $116.1 billion, based on August Treasury data. Bitcoin reserves rose from about $5.8 billion at the end of June.
Why it matters
Timing gives the report extra weight. It landed a day after the Binance theft, when issuers' ability to freeze tokens and honour redemptions was back in focus; our Circle and Tether freeze coverage tracked how quickly the two issuers blocked stolen coins. A fatter buffer means more room to absorb losses on riskier holdings such as metals, bitcoin and loans.
The limits are familiar. An attestation checks figures on a single date and is not a full audit, and USDT holders do not receive the interest the reserves earn. Tether's model keeps that yield, which is why profits track short-term rates so closely. The company has also been branching out, as our Tether mining software story showed.
The breakdown also shows how Tether has diversified. Alongside Treasuries, Crypto Briefing listed $9.52 billion of overnight reverse repos, $7.18 billion of term repos, $4.18 billion of listed equities and about $6 billion of other investments. Cointelegraph noted that USDT accounts for about 60% of a stablecoin market worth roughly $297.3 billion, according to DefiLlama, and Ardoino said the user base passed 700 million. Size is the reason the Tether Q3 profit matters beyond the company itself: a token this large is a major buyer of short-term U.S. government debt and a core piece of crypto market plumbing.
What's next
Watch whether USDT supply grows again after months of flat issuance, and how much of the buffer is kept in volatile assets. Tether's Q3 announcement links the full BDO opinion.
Rates are the swing factor. With the Fed signalling more hikes, T-bill yields stay high, which supports the next Tether Q3 profit comparison when the fourth-quarter figures arrive.
Chief executive Paolo Ardoino framed the surplus as a foundation for reliability in a chaotic geopolitical environment. Critics will keep asking for audited, published statements; the company said in August that KPMG had completed a first full audit, Cointelegraph reported, but those statements were not made public.
