Zcash NU7 upgrade date set as ZEC jumps 11%
Zcash developers fixed the mainnet activation point for NU7, a faster-block upgrade, and ZEC led the crypto market higher as traders priced the change.

The Zcash NU7 upgrade now has a date on the chain. Developers set the mainnet activation height for the network's next upgrade, and ZEC jumped about 11% to roughly $1,260 by Wednesday morning in Asia, Oct. 21, leading the largest cryptocurrencies, CoinDesk reported.
What happened
The activation height is the block at which all nodes start enforcing the new rules. NU7 shortens the target block interval to 25 seconds from 75, which makes confirmations about three times quicker. It also routes 60% of transaction fees into a reserve that is paid out over time, part of a Network Sustainability Mechanism meant to support future mining rewards.
The upgrade has been running on Zcash's public test network since Oct. 4, when it activated at block 4,465,026, according to Blockhead, which said core teams had targeted Nov. 5 for mainnet. NU7 also disables legacy version 4 transactions, which closes the oldest shielded pool, Sprout. That pool held about 22,309 ZEC on Oct. 17, around $26 million, and holders must move those coins before the switch to keep spending them.
The rally followed a weak month. Decrypt said ZEC had dropped about 25% over 30 days before Tuesday's bounce, and Blockhead put the price near $1,140 on Oct. 19, about 29% below a late-September peak near $1,600.
Why it matters
A fixed height turns a plan into a countdown for exchanges, wallets and node operators, who must run compatible software or risk following the old rules. That is why the Zcash NU7 upgrade matters to infrastructure first; one analysis cited by Blockhead noted it does not directly create demand for the token.
Privacy coins have been strong in general. Decrypt said rival Monero rose 15.29% over seven days to $609.87, and ZEC's market value reached about $20.57 billion during Tuesday's move. Blockhead noted that shielded transactions, which hide sender, receiver and amount, recently made up as much as 56% of Zcash activity, a level not seen in years.
Traders still bought the news. The wider market rose too, with bitcoin near $82,700 and ether up 2%, after U.S. funds saw their biggest inflow in a month, a turn from the outflows in our crypto ETF weekly outflows report. ZEC tends to move harder than the market, as its last swing showed in our Zcash rebound story.
What's next
Next comes the countdown to activation and the Sprout migration deadline, which depends on the final height. On Polymarket, ZEC reaching $2,000 on Binance by Dec. 31 was priced at 28% and a dip to $700 at 20% as of 08:25 MSK on Oct. 21.
A smooth Zcash NU7 upgrade would remove one risk, but price targets far above current levels still need a broad crypto rally.
The call
We call that Zcash will not trade at or above $2,000 on Binance by Dec. 31, 2026. Polymarket puts that outcome at 72%. Reaching it would take a gain of roughly 60% from about $1,260 in ten weeks, after a month in which the token lost a quarter of its value.
