Deutsche Bank crypto custody launch is weeks away

Germany's biggest lender says its first digital asset service will go live within weeks for institutional and corporate clients, starting with bitcoin and ether custody before expanding into stablecoins and Asia next year.

Deutsche Bank crypto custody is weeks away from launch, according to Gerald Podobnik, a 23-year veteran of the lender who co-heads its corporate bank. Speaking to Reuters in Bangkok on Oct. 16, where the IMF and World Bank were holding their annual meetings, he said Germany's biggest lender would start with custody of major cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ether, then expand the platform into Asian financial centers next year.

What happened

The service builds on a plan the bank set out on Sept. 16, when it said go-live with first clients would come this year, subject to completing the regulatory timeline. The first supported assets are bitcoin and ether plus a handful of stablecoins and e-money tokens, namely USDC, EURC and EURAU, according to the Deutsche Bank announcement. Tokenized financial instruments are on the roadmap.

Deutsche Bank will hold the wallets and private keys on clients' behalf and let them transfer assets to third parties. The bank described hardware-based key protection, multi-person approvals, separate warm and cold storage and outside technology providers for defined components. No specific launch date has been announced, EconoTimes noted.

Retail savers are not the target. The first clients will come from the corporate and investment banks: companies, fund managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers and sovereign bodies, all subject to the bank's due diligence and risk appetite.

More assets could be added later if clients ask for them and the bank's product, risk and regulatory reviews allow it. "The service will be further developed in line with client demand, regulatory requirements and the bank's risk appetite," Podobnik said in September. EconoTimes pointed out that the bank's product page ties availability to technical readiness as well.

Why it matters

Podobnik framed Deutsche Bank crypto custody as an addition rather than a replacement. "I believe that, as the financial system, we will need to offer tokenised or blockchain solutions to our clients as additional services alongside our traditional ones," he told Reuters, citing the hundreds of billions of dollars now held in stablecoins. The push supports a goal of about 8% compound annual growth in corporate banking by 2028.

When the plan was first announced in September, he struck the same note: "Digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it," calling them new rails able to run alongside today's market plumbing.

The phased plan goes beyond safekeeping. After custody, the bank plans to help clients convert cash to and from major stablecoins, offer tokenized deposits and support issuance of blockchain-based securities such as digital bonds. CryptoLately noted that BNY Mellon and U.S. Bancorp already offer comparable services, so Frankfurt is catching up with peers.

European rivals are moving too, from Kraken's Payward bank license in the EU to Standard Chartered's RLUSD custody in Dubai. Bank custody gives treasurers a regulated counterparty instead of a crypto-native one.

What's next

The bank warns clients that custody does not shield them from price swings, fraud or cyber incidents, and that crypto assets lack deposit-guarantee protection. Those disclosures will matter as corporate treasurers decide whether to hold tokens on balance sheet.

Next comes the German go-live, then any word on tokenized deposits and the Asian rollout planned for 2027. A smooth start for Deutsche Bank crypto custody would add pressure on other large European lenders to follow.
