GPT-6 Intelligent UI Turns ChatGPT Answers Into Interactive Tools

OpenAI has started rolling out GPT-6 across ChatGPT with a feature called Intelligent UI, which answers questions with charts, buttons, forms and small tools instead of text alone.

ChatGPT is starting to look less like a chat window and more like an app builder. On October 7, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 across ChatGPT along with GPT-6 Intelligent UI, a capability that lets the assistant answer with interactive interfaces such as charts, tappable buttons, forms and simple tools. Paid users got it first, and the rollout reaches the Free and Go tiers starting October 8.

What happened

In its announcement, OpenAI described Intelligent UI as a change that "marks a significant shift in how people interact with ChatGPT," according to Unite.AI. The company said the new GPT-6 model in ChatGPT is built for the more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week, and that it introduced the first GPT-6 models for paid customers in September.

The model was trained to compose responses from text, visuals and interactive elements, choosing the format based on the question. A comparison might appear side by side, while an explanation might come as an interactive diagram. ChatGPT can still answer in plain text when that is most useful. Users can also ask it to build a tool for the task at hand, such as a savings calculator, a bill splitter or a small game.

MacRumors described OpenAI's sample comparisons, which include a recipe widget that adjusts quantities to the number of guests, checklists, integrated maps and multiple-choice follow-up questions. OpenAI said Intelligent UI uses a library of native, streamable components plus a compiler that processes the interface as the model generates it, so the interface can appear progressively. The company said it expanded its training methods so the model makes decisions about content, layout, visuals and interaction, including evaluating the interfaces it creates for clarity, usefulness and completeness, and learning when a simple text response is enough.

One demonstration shows the difference. Asked for a Sunday lamb roast plan, GPT-5.6 Instant gave a text-heavy answer, while GPT-6 Instant produced a visual plan with images of the dishes, a shopping-quantity calculator that adjusts to the number of guests and a step-by-step cooking timeline formatted as a checklist, Unite.AI reported.

Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna. The update applies only to the Chat experience; the models behind Work and Codex are not changing. Enterprise availability depends on workplace admin settings.

Why it matters

GPT-6 Intelligent UI changes what an answer is. Instead of reading a block of text and then opening a spreadsheet or another app, a user can adjust an input inside the response and see the result. That moves ChatGPT closer to the software people already use for planning, budgeting and learning, and puts pressure on apps whose main job is presenting information.

Speed is the other change. OpenAI said GPT-6 can begin answering while it continues to think, building the answer across several partial responses. For questions that need web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, the company said, according to Unite.AI. In an internal evaluation, GPT-6 Extra High began answering in the same time as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better than GPT-5.6 Extra High. Those are OpenAI's own figures and have not been independently tested.

Safety claims come with the launch. OpenAI said GPT-6 builds on safety advances from its Astra model, with updated training against cyberattacks, biological threats and violence, and stronger resistance to multi-turn attempts to bypass its rules. It also said the model is better at recognizing when it lacks the information or tools to answer. As AI output becomes richer, labeling and provenance matter more, an issue OpenAI has also addressed in Europe with its textGrain watermark. Businesses testing GPT-6 for specialized work, as in the Ironclad contracting study, will now see the same model family reach consumers.

What's next

The rollout to Free and Go users starts on October 8, so the main test is how everyday users on those tiers respond. OpenAI itself said work remains to improve the model's design judgment and expand what it can create. Watch for bugs in generated tools, for how well interactive answers handle accuracy, and for how rivals respond.

OpenAI says that over time it wants ChatGPT to create more of the interfaces people need, and that software will adapt to people rather than the other way round. GPT-6 Intelligent UI is the first broad step in that direction, and its success will depend on whether the generated tools are accurate and reliable enough to trust.
