Aptos Token Unlock Ends Four-Year Vesting Cycle

Monday's Aptos token unlock of about 11.31 million APT closes the original four-year investor and contributor vesting cycle, after which monthly releases are expected to fall by roughly 60%.

The crypto calendar for the week of October 12 opens with an Aptos token unlock that is more structural than the usual monthly drip. CoinCentral said the October 12 release covers about 11.31 million APT and ends the four-year investor and contributor vesting cycle that began around Aptos's October 2022 mainnet launch.

What happened

The Crypto Times framed the same Aptos token unlock as the anniversary of that mainnet launch and cited market estimates that monthly releases could fall from about 11.31 million APT before the change to about 4.54 million APT afterward, a reduction of roughly 60%. Both outlets stressed the wider week around the event: U.S. September CPI is due Wednesday, October 14, bank earnings begin Tuesday, and Arbitrum faces a separate unlock later in the week that CoinCentral put near 92.65 million ARB, or roughly $17.5 million at the time of writing.

CoinCentral's week-ahead also noted bitcoin near $83,000 and ether near $2,500 as the period began, with spot bitcoin ETFs still deeply negative over a five-day window even after a $21.1 million inflow on October 9. The Crypto Times put bitcoin near $83,700 and ether near $2,543 in its October 12 snapshot. Those prices are context for why an Aptos token unlock lands in a risk-off tape rather than a euphoric one.

Why it matters

Token unlocks change available supply; they do not by themselves force selling. The Crypto Times repeated that point while listing Cronos, Starknet, deBridge and others on the same week's tracker. What makes the Aptos token unlock different is the vesting cliff: ending the original four-year schedule can permanently lower the monthly issuance path if the 11.31 million to 4.54 million estimates hold. That is a supply-story change, not only a one-day float event.

It also sits beside other October narratives we have covered, including Thailand crypto ETF rules that open an exchange path mid-month and the Starknet layer 1 roadmap debate that The Crypto Times noted is separate from Starknet's own unlock line. Traders watching Aptos will weigh the lower future issuance against whatever unlocked coins recipients actually sell into thin books.

Unlock trackers disagree on dollar values because spot prices move, which is why both CoinCentral and The Crypto Times leaned on token counts first. An Aptos token unlock of 11.31 million APT is small as a share of circulating supply—CoinCentral put it near 0.64% in related week-ahead framing elsewhere—but the vesting endpoint is the strategic change. If monthly issuance really steps down toward 4.54 million APT, sell pressure from unlock calendars should ease even if any given Monday still looks noisy on a chart.

Macro hedges around the event are straightforward. Soft CPI could lift risk assets and absorb unlocked coins; hot CPI could do the opposite while traders are already watching ether and bitcoin ETF outflows. The Crypto Times also listed Pump.fun, Peaq, Starknet, Cronos and deBridge on the same week's supply watch, a reminder that Aptos is not alone. Still, few of those events close a multi-year vesting design. That is why desks marked the Aptos token unlock on October 12 even before knowing how recipients would behave.

Conference calendars add colour without moving supply. Paradigm Frontiers in San Francisco, DC Fintech Week and EDCON in Kuala Lumpur give founders places to talk while unlock dashboards blink. None of those panels change the Aptos vesting math. What would change it is a revised emission schedule published by the foundation or a large recipient disclosing lockups. Until then, treating the October 12 print as the end of the original four-year design—and the start of a thinner monthly calendar—is the conservative reading of CoinCentral and Crypto Times reporting.

In short, the Aptos token unlock is a supply-regime story wrapped inside a CPI week, and only recipient behaviour will tell traders which half dominates the tape.

What's next

Wednesday's CPI print and Thursday's producer prices and retail sales will dominate crypto beta. Friday brings a Deribit options expiry that CoinCentral flagged at about $1.25 billion of bitcoin open interest and $247.5 million of ether open interest, figures that can change before settlement. For Aptos specifically, the follow-through question after the Aptos token unlock is whether on-chain transfer and exchange-deposit data show distribution or quiet custody moves.
