Saudi FII conference postponed to 2027 after Houthi strikes

Riyadh has delayed its flagship investor summit, which Wall Street chiefs were due to attend next week, as missile and drone attacks on the kingdom intensify.

The FII conference postponed on Monday, Oct. 19, is Saudi Arabia's showcase for global capital. The Future Investment Initiative, known as "Davos in the Desert," was set for Oct. 26 to 29 in Riyadh and will now be held in 2027, organizers said, as Houthi missile and drone attacks on the kingdom escalate.

What happened

The FII Institute said the tenth edition, themed "The Power of Legacy," would move to next year and that new dates would come "very soon." All registrations and partnerships stay valid, it said. Chief executive Princess Maha bint Mishari bin Abdulaziz framed the delay as a way to make sure the anniversary event meets expectations.

The statement did not mention security, but the timing did. Earlier on Monday, Reuters had reported that organizers had dropped the in-person format and were considering a delay. A Houthi strike on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on Oct. 10 killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300, CNBC reported. On Monday the group claimed new attacks on that airport, on Abha airport, on Aramco facilities in Yanbu and on the Shaybah oilfield.

The speaker list read like a Wall Street board meeting. CNBC said JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon, Goldman Sachs' David Solomon, Blackstone's Stephen Schwarzman, BlackRock's Larry Fink and Citigroup's Jane Fraser were due to appear. A draft program also listed Standard Chartered's Bill Winters, the South China Morning Post said. Some attendees had planned to fly to Bahrain and drive five hours to Riyadh.

Why it matters

FII is more than a talking shop. Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund launched it in 2017, and the conference has served as a stage for the kingdom's push to diversify away from oil, including the unveiling of the NEOM megaproject at the first edition. The South China Morning Post described it as a must-attend event for some of the world's top financiers.

With the FII conference postponed, that pipeline of announcements slips just as Riyadh needs foreign money to fund its economic transformation into tourism, sports and technology. It also removes a regular forum where bank chiefs such as Fink, whose views on data center spending risks moved markets last week, meet Gulf investors.

The broader message is about risk premiums. Kpler data show Gulf crude shipments slumped to roughly 8.5 million barrels a day last week from over 20 million the week before, after repeated attacks on vessels. Our earlier note on Gulf supply risk flagged how quickly security events feed into prices.

What's next

The FII Institute's notice says its teams will contact participants directly in the coming days. Investors will watch whether sovereign fund deals planned for the summit are announced anyway, through other channels, or held back.

The next signals come from the battlefield and from diplomacy. Egypt's parliament has delayed until Oct. 26 a vote that would let its forces assist Saudi Arabia if requested. Until attacks on Saudi infrastructure ease, the FII conference postponed this week may not be the last Gulf event to be moved.
